The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unveiled the official music video for ‘Akwaba,’ the designated song for the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations 2023 scheduled to be held in Ivory Coast from January 13 to February 11, 2024.
Published on Universal Music Africa, the video follows the launch of the track by CAF and the local organizing committee (COCAN) approximately a month prior to the tournament.
Titled ‘Akwaba,’ meaning “welcome” in Baoulé, the song is a blend of Afrobeats, rap, and zouglou. Noteworthy contributors to the track include the iconic Ivorian group Magic System, known for their work on the 2014 FIFA World Cup soundtrack ‘Magic in the Air,’ along with Egyptian popstar Mohamed Ramadan, Nigerian singer Yemi Alade, and French producer Dany Synthé.
The ensemble presented a live rendition of ‘Akwaba’ during the tournament draw. Described as a representation of the tournament’s African football theme and a celebration of love for the sport, the song pays homage to the continent’s cultural diversity and Ivory Coast’s warm hospitality.
In an official statement, it was expressed, “We are proud and happy to have been chosen by our country to contribute musically to the success of the Africa Cup of Nations, to be held from January 13 to February 11 in Côte d’Ivoire,” as Magic System acknowledged the honor and thanked the Ivorian government, COCAN, and the Ivorian Football Association (FIF) for the vote of confidence.
The Africa Cup of Nations will feature 24 African teams, including the defending champions Senegal.
